All We Have Is This Moment
We all have those big plans for “someday.”
You know the ones I’m talking about.
In our minds, we picture these scenes of how the future will look, when everything is perfect and when we’re happy. We imagine what life will be like when we earn the money we’d like to be earning, when we land our dream job, or when we buy that beautiful beach home.
But what if those dreams and desires never become a reality? The sad part is that for too many, they probably won’t.
Why? For one simple reason:
Dreaming can’t replace doing.
There is no “secret” formula
The more I learn about goal-setting and achievement from people who have followed their dreams and achieved their biggest goals, the more I realize this:
The key is simply to get started!
Whether I’m transcribing interviews with the top producers at a Toronto real estate company I used to do some freelance work for, reading books by best-selling authors, or tuning in for live “Coffee Chats” with industry experts across all different facets of the publishing company I currently freelance for— they all stress that nothing can replace taking action.
Whatever it is you want to do, you’ll never get there unless you start working towards it.
Obviously, this is not a novel idea. It’s clear that things don’t just “happen” simply because we wish they would. And yet, far too many people seem to think (or I guess, hope?) that just wanting something badly enough will be the magic ingredient that makes it happen.
You have to choose to begin
The concept is pretty obvious; if you don’t take a step, you’re not going to move. But in my experience, knowing that doesn’t make taking the first step any easier.
That’s because taking that first step is a choice. You have to choose to commit to it. And commitment is scary territory for many people.
I know because I’ve spent countless hours fantasizing about my future and what it might look like. I’ve dreamed about what I hope it will involve, but I haven’t actually committed to getting there. I haven’t made the decision to make those things a reality, by going after them.
What I’ve realized is that the future is an imaginary place. While it’s nice — it’s not real.
Where I do have influence is right here and right now. Now is the only thing I can work with.
The actions you take today matter
Nobody knows what their future will look like, but I believe you can greatly influence it with the actions you take today.
I love this quote from W.H. Murray:
“Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
That’s why actually starting is so important. Being bold and taking a chance shows the universe that you are not afraid to go for your dreams.
Starting may be the hardest part — but it’s also the part that matters most.
“Do not wait for a change of environment before you act. Cause a change of environment through action.”
