Until a couple of years ago, I didn’t love walking.
In fact, I’m not sure if I’d even say I liked it. It wasn’t something I did very often, and certainly not for fun.
Growing up, I played on all kinds of sports teams and was able to get my exercise that way. But since leaving university, my involvement with my favourite sports has dwindled down to nothing, and my health has paid the price.
It wasn’t until I met my partner that I started going on more walks. At the beginning of our relationship, we were both temporarily living…
I’ve been thinking lately about how quickly plans can change.
With the Covid-19 pandemic still at the forefront, along with the constant changes and the uncertainty it brings, I thought back to an event that happened a few years ago.
One minute, I was drinking my coffee and walking the few blocks to get back to my car. The next, my path was blocked by a crime scene — police tape, cruisers, and officers everywhere.
I had parked at a friend’s place the night before and was now coming to get my car to start the drive home from Toronto.

Some days you just feel “blah.”
You know the ones — you don’t feel particularly inspired or motivated to accomplish what you wanted to. On those days, you don’t have the energy to do much of anything.
But maybe that’s perfectly okay. Every day doesn’t have to be amazing and productive and successful and riveting.
Being alive is a balance of creating, doing, achieving — and also resting. Just simply “being.”
Sometimes I forget that. I get so caught up in this busy world that’s spinning so fast. I see everyone hustling and bustling, trying to accomplish so much, with…
We all have those big plans for “someday.”
You know the ones I’m talking about.
In our minds, we picture these scenes of how the future will look, when everything is perfect and when we’re happy. We imagine what life will be like when we earn the money we’d like to be earning, when we land our dream job, or when we buy that beautiful beach home.
But what if those dreams and desires never become a reality? The sad part is that for too many, they probably won’t.
Why? For one simple reason:
Dreaming can’t replace doing.
The more…
I have my sister to thank for this little life lesson.
Actually, it turned out to be more of a gigantic life lesson, an over-arching guide for how to live life—but it sometimes still causes me grief to this day.
It causes me grief because I tend to forget it often, and every time I do, I’m thrown back into the throngs of the painful belief that I have to “figure out” what to do with my life, as if there’s only one right answer, one true calling/purpose.
Our culture loves to perpetuate this idea—and I love to fall for…
“For anyone trying to discern what to do with their life: pay attention to what you pay attention to. That’s pretty much all the info you need.” — Amy Krouse Rosenthal
I first heard the above quote a few weeks ago while listening to Austin Kleon’s Steal Like An Artist audiobook trilogy on my drive home one day.
For whatever reason, Rosenthal’s words stood out to me, and they’ve stuck with me ever since. Her words have drifted through my mind several times, including this morning.
I was sitting on the floor in front of my vision board when I…
For many years, I had this idea of what meditation was — or what it was supposed to be.
It turns out I was completely wrong. But we’ll get to that.
I saw meditation as the way to emptiness, and for me, emptiness used to seem like peace. I reasoned that since it was my thoughts that were causing me so much turmoil, if I could just eliminate them, I’d be happier. I’d get a break. …
I just finished reading Jen Sincero’s book, You Are a Badass at Making Money.
And no, Jen, I was not brave enough to read this in public. Ever. I was barely even brave enough to be seen expressing interest in it at the bookstore, let alone actually bringing it up to the checkout counter and having to face the cashier. Whenever someone walked by me standing at the bookshelf checking it out, I practically hid.
But since buying it a couple of years ago, I have continued to come back to it because of how many golden nuggets are contained…
Have you ever felt completely disconnected from yourself, like you don’t really know who you are?
Almost as if your body — the thing constantly running around, scurrying from place to place and striving to accomplish one task after another — wasn’t really you?
For many years now, I’ve noticed feelings like these operating in my life.
At one point, the feelings of disconnect and meaninglessness became too great to ignore any longer. The questions I was really longing for an answer to began to surface, demanding my attention.
I reached a point where I could no longer just go…
Valentine’s Day is a funny thing.
I’ve never really loved it, because I believe love is something that should be celebrated every day—not just on one day of the year.
Lucky for me, I’ve found my everyday Valentine.
I also know that not everyone will find theirs in this lifetime, and knowing that makes me even more grateful to share my life with the perfect partner for me.
So, to the man who makes our house feel like a home, I want to say a few things.
In calendar years, we haven’t been together that long. Our first date was…
