“Give yourself permission to be right here, right now.”

Meditation teacher Tamara Levitt’s voice soothes me, pulling me into the present moment. I sit down on the couch and try to get comfortable, settling in for my morning Daily Calm session.

One of the things I love about meditation is that you can’t do it wrong. I didn’t realize this years ago when I first began meditating, though. I was always feeling like a failure, wondering why it seemed so easy for everyone but me.

Unsurprisingly, I also felt this way when I began writing. Why was everyone else seeing so much “success” so fast? What was I doing wrong? Why couldn’t I get people interested in my writing?

Just like I wanted to be a Zen master right out of the gate, I thought I’d see success in writing much sooner than I have. However, in some ways, I’m glad that these things are taking their sweet time, because they’ve taught me so much along the way.

These two practices have been a part of my life (on and off) for several years now, and I’m starting to see the similarities between them and how they’re working together to improve my life.
